David Harsha, MD FAAFP
Program Director
Director of Sports Medicine

Hometown: Battle Creek, MI
Undergraduate: Oklahoma State University

Med School: University of Oklahoma
Family Medicine Residency: Indiana University School of Medicine
Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship: Indiana University School of Medicine

Dr. Harsha obtained his engineering and premedical degrees at Oklahoma State University and a medical degree at the University of Oklahoma. His interest in the total care of athletes led him to pursue a fellowship in Sports Medicine at Indiana University.

His research interest has resulted in several publications. He currently serves as Team Physician for the Indianapolis Ice Hockey team, the Indiana Fever WNBA basketball team and Pike High School. He also serves as a consulting physician for USA Gymnastics.

Dr. Harsha and his wife Dr. Cathy Harsha (Clinical Instructor of OB/GYN) have 3 children, enjoy spending time at their cabin and going to theme parks.

 

Heidi Harris, MD FAAFP

Associate Program Director
Family Medicine Clinic Director

Dr. Harris is a graduate of Southern Illinois University School of Medicine. After completing her residency in family medicine at St.Vincent, she joined the faculty of the residency program. Her special areas of interest involve women and children's health. As a faculty member, she enjoys teaching medical students at different levels of training. Heidi and her husband have two children.

 

Curt R Ward, MD MBA

Associate Program Director

Dr. Ward joined the faculty in January 2003 following six years of private practice in Columbus, Indiana. In Columbus, he was a member of a large group of family physicians who practiced the full spectrum of family medicine including inpatient, nursing home and obstetric care. During his tenure at Columbus Regional Hospital, Dr. Ward served as his practice’s medical director for two years and as the Chief of the Department of Family Medicine.

Dr. Ward enjoys the broad range of patient care opportunities within the field of family medicine. He performs obstetric ultrasounds, treadmills, and colposcopies; and supervises obstetric deliveries, adult inpatient medicine, and outpatient procedures. Caring for the underserved and international medicine are also interests of his. He spent a month at Tenwek Hospital in Kenya and was a volunteer staff at Volunteers in Medicine in Columbus.

Recently, he has become the Physician Formation Leader for St Vincent Health. In that position, he supports multiple programs that are vital for physicians connecting with their calling and purpose in medicine; including the Physician Outreach Network )http://www.stvincent.org/outreach/default.htm), Doc2Doc – a physician to physician mentoring program, and the annual Physician Spirituality Summit.

Dr. Ward is a musician wanna-be, so instead, he produces worship services at his church, and there gets to work closely with his wife, Kristy, who’s day job is as an emergency physician, but on weekends lead worship at their church. They have two children, Jack and Kate.

 

Cathy Bryant, MD FAAFP
Clinical Faculty

Hometown: Indianapolis
Undergraduate: DePauw University

Med School: Indiana University School of Medicine

Dr. Bryant is a native Hoosier and received her medical degree from Indiana University School of Medicine. She trained in family medicine at the former St. Paul-Ramsey Medical Center (now Regions) in St. Paul, MN. She enjoys practicing full-spectrum family medicine. After practicing for 4 years in community health in South Minneapolis, Dr. Bryant returned to Indianapolis in 1998 to practice with the faculty at the St. Vincent Family Medicine Residency in Indianapolis.

Dr. Bryant has two boys that keep her quite busy with swimming, baseball, swording and all manner of little boy games!

 

Jeffrey Fields, MD

Family Medicine Faculty
Sports Medicine Faculty

Dr. Fields, a native of Indiana, specializes in family medicine and sports medicine. Fellowship trained at IU, his goals are to provide compassionate and comprehensive care for both athletes and non-athletes. He currently serves as the team physician for Marion College and the Indianapolis Indians. Dr. Fields received his biochemistry degree at Notre Dame University.

After serving in the Air Force, he returned to Indiana University for medical school and family practice residency. He is a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians, American Medical Society for Sports Medicine and American College of Sports Medicine. He and his wife enjoy international travel, hiking, camping and other outdoor activities.

Athletes of every caliber and level - professional, collegiate, high school, and amateur - come to our Family Medicine/Sports Medicine physicians to stay healthy through treatment, treatment and conditioning. St Vincent is the largest, hospital-based sports medicine program in Indiana and we are dedicated to keeping athletes injury-free and competitive in their chosen sports.

Dr. Jeffrey Fields and our other physicians, as well as certified athletic trainers provide sports medicine services to more than 40 professional teams, universities, high schools, junior highs, clubs and organizations throughout central Indiana.

 

Maurice Henein, MD FAAFP
Clinical Faculty

Hometown: Annapolis, MD
Undergraduate: Vanderbilt University

Med School: University of Virginia School of Medicine

Dr. Henein graduated from the University of Virginia School of Medicine and then completed residency at the University of Cincinnati. He stayed on for a faculty development fellowship focused on underserved care. He then moved to Indiana and served for five years at an underserved faith-base health center near downtown Indianapolis providing care in the outpatient setting as well as OB and inpatient services.

He joined our faculty in 2009 to further pursue his interest in teaching. He has a special interest in international health. He will be focusing in on solidifying an international health curriculum for the residency program, furthering St Vincent's mission to serve our community locally and globally.

Dr. Henein enjoys spending time with his wife and two children, and recreational activities including basketball and golf.

 

Shannon Joyce, MD FAAFP
Clinical Faculty

Hometown: Lowell, IN
Undergraduate: Morehead State University, Morehead, KY

Med School: University of Louisville, Louisville, KY

Dr. Joyce received her medical degree from the University of Louisville School of Medicine and returned to her native Indiana to complete her family medicine residency at St.Vincent. Dr. Joyce enjoys patient care from the delivery room to the nursing home as she actively teaches obstetrical care and manages the long term care experience. Her special interests include obstetrics, office gynecology, preventive health, patient education, and geriatrics. She enjoys photography, travel, and cooking with her husband and two children.

 

Joel Kary, MD

Family Medicine Faculty
Sports Medicine Faculty

Dr. Kary is a full-time Clinical Faculty in the St. Vincent Family Medicine Residency Program. His areas of specialty include Family Medicine and Sports Medicine.

Originally from Illinois, Dr. Kary completed his undergraduate studies at Anderson University in Anderson, IN with a degree in Athletic Training. He earned his medical degree from Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in 2003. His family medicine residency training was completed at St. Francis Hospital in Indianapolis followed by a primary care sports medicine fellowship at the South Bend/University of Notre Dame Sports Medicine Fellowship in South Bend, IN. He served as an assistant team physician for football and basketball and head team physician for men’s soccer while at Notre Dame.

Dr. Kary is a team physician for Butler University, Lawrence North High School, and the Indiana Invaders track club. His work as a sports medicine physician has included serving at the USA Track and Field Championships, USA National Gymnastic Championships, FINA World Swimming Championships, and numerous other national/international sporting events. He currently is the Physician Coordinator for the USA Track and Field Elite Athlete Medical Support Program and is a member of the USA Weightlifting Sports Medicine Committee.

Dr. Kary has a special interest in non-operative musculoskeletal medicine and management of medical conditions related to sports such as concussion, asthma, and mononucleosis. As a former college runner, he particularly enjoys the evaluation and management of running and endurance athlete injuries.

He and his wife, Mia, have an almost 4 year old daughter, Regan, and 9 month old twin daughters, Shae and Brynn. They love living in Indianapolis and especially enjoy living close to the Monon Trail, Butler University, Café Patachou, Indianapolis Museum of Art, and Indianapolis Children’s Museum.

Dr. Kary is a member of the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine, the American College of Sports Medicine, and the American Academy of Family Physicians.

 

Amy LaHood, MD
Clinical Faculty

Med School: Rush Medical College, Chicago, IL

Dr. Amy LaHood graduated from Rush Medical College in Chicago and completed her family medicine residency at MacNeal hospital. She went on to pursue a fellowship in Maternal Child Health to receive further training in obstetrics and newborn care. Following her training, Dr. LaHood spent 5 years working in Indianapolis at a community health center with special focus on caring for women and children in the Latino immigrant community. Dr. LaHood joined St. Vincent Faculty in 2005 and continues to provide care to underserved populations while being proactive in training family medicine residents and students. Last year, Dr. LaHood and 4 family medicine residents pioneered group prenatal care in English and Spanish for patients at the Primary Care Center. This innovative model of care continues to be a great experience for patients and the residents who elect to participate. Dr. LaHood has a passion for public health and will complete her Masters in Public Health from IUPUI in May 2010. She plans to utilize her public health expertise to provide residents with “population health” perspective and to continue to advocate for the medically underserved. Other special interests include primary care research, cultural competence and international medicine. When not working, Dr. LaHood enjoys spending time with her family and being outdoors.

 

Elizabeth Roth, MD
Co-Director IM/FM Program
St.Vincent IM/FM Graduate

Hometown: Upland, IN
Undergraduate: Wheaton College, Wheaton, IL

Med School: Indiana University School of Medicine

Dr. Elizabeth Roth’s unique blend of medical knowledge and health care interests are an integral part of her approach to providing quality health care to individuals, families and her community. She has primary care training in both Family Medicine and Internal Medicine.

As a family doctor, she values caring for the whole family, from birth through old age, and the Internal Medicine specialty brings additional in-depth training in adult medicine. She spends half her time as teaching faculty for hospital medicine at St. Vincent and the other half in the office, seeing adults and children. Her residency training was at St. Vincent, and she attended Indiana University School of Medicine, spending her first two years at the Muncie campus.

Dr. Roth grew up in Upland, IN and then studied sociology at Wheaton College, in Illinois, during which time she spent an internship in Peru, South America. Those experiences were fundamental in developing her understanding of global healthcare needs. She is interested in caring for underserved people both abroad and here in Indianapolis and is fluent in Spanish.

In her time away from work, Dr. Roth is active in her church and enjoys spending time with her husband and family. She loves the outdoors and spends many happy hours at Eagle Creek Park, kayaking, running, and rollerblading.

 

Thomas J. Barbera, PhD

Behavioral Sciences

Dr. Barbera completed graduate school at the University of New Mexico and internship at Wilford Hall Medical Center in San Antonio. Before coming to St Vincent he was an Air Force psychologist stationed in Florida, where he was involved in family practice residency training for 4 years. His areas of interest include health psychology, mood disorders, and cultural competency. He enjoys photography, sports, chocolate, and time with his wife and two children.

 

Jerry Fletcher, MD

Psychiatry

Dr. Fletcher completed his medical education, General Psychiatry residency, and Fellowship in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Indiana University School of Medicine. He is Board Certified in child, adolescent, and adult Neurology and Psychiatry. Before coming to St. Vincent he was Associate Professor of Psychiatry at IU Medical Center. He is currently the Director of Youth Psychiatric Services at St. Vincent and Director of Behavioral Medicine at the St.Vincent Primary Care Center. Jerry's current interests are OCD, eating disorders, and other adolescent issues. He loves Nebraska football having been an under grad at Nebraska and enjoys fishing in remote areas of Canada. Jerry is always a hit at Family Medicine's Breakfast with Santa, though he's never recognized.

 

Maria V. Fletcher, MD

Clinical Faculty
2008 Indiana Academy of Family Practitioners Teacher of the Year

Dr. Fletcher is a graduate of Indiana University School of Medicine and completed her residency in Family Practice at St. Francis Hospital in Beech Grove, Indiana. For 3 years after residency, she worked at People's Health Center where she was the first family physician at the clinic to provide obstetric services. After that, she went into private practice in Beech Grove, Indiana. In 1991, she joined American Health Network in Brownsburg, Indiana where she stayed until joining the Family Practice residency program in September 2001. Her special interests include teaching medical students of all levels, anti-tobacco education in the elementary schools (TarWars), medical mentoring, and cultural competency in health care. She loves to travel and is continuing to improve her Spanish. With their 3 children out of the house now, Dr. Maria Fletcher and her husband, Dr. Jerry Fletcher, enjoy living in the middle of the woods on "Fletcher Hill" in Indianapolis (the site of our annual world famous FM Chili Cookoff held each fall for the Residents and Faculty). She is a race walker and an amateur photographer (mainly of lampposts).

 

Toni Eash, Pharm.D

Ambulatory Care Clinical Pharmacist

Dr. Eash graduated from Butler University in 2001. After completing her Pharmacy Practice Residency and Primary Care Specialty Pharmacy Residency at St.Vincent, she joined Dr. Morrical-Kline as an Ambulatory Care Clinical Pharmacist for the St. Vincent Primary Care Center. Toni and her husband enjoy traveling, spoiling her cat (Sadie), reading, and being active in their church.

 

Karie Morrical-Kline, Pharm.D

Ambulatory Care Clinical Pharmacist

Dr. Morrical-Kline graduated from Butler University in 1996 and completed her Pharmacy Practice Residency at St. Vincent. Currently, she is the Ambulatory Care Clinical Pharmacist for the St. Vincent Primary Care Center and Director of the Pharmacy Practice Residency Program. Karie enjoys spending time with her husband (a fantastic cook) and dog Daisy (always a challenge). She also likes water sports and warm weather.

 

Rod Pittman

Rod Pittman has experience in crisis management in psychiatric and general medical settings.

 

 

Linda Wilcox

Licensed Clinical Social Worker

Linda Wilcox has experience in admitting, inpatient units of the Stress Center and additional expertise in chemical dependency and mental health.

 

 

Diane Eastman

Program Coordinator

Diane is a graduate of Ball State University with a BS degree in Office Administration. She has been the Program Coordinator for over 16 years and has seen many young residents mature from medical students to practicing family medicine physicians. Her expertise and dedication guarantees students and residents receive the attention they need to complete their training.

 

Laura Cotton

Program Coordinator

After completing her training in Elementary Education at the University of Dayton, Laura re-focused her attention to medical education at The Cleveland Clinic in Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, Colorectal Surgery and Dermatology. Upon relocating to Baltimore Maryland in 1997, she worked with MedStar Health in two of their community hospitals with Cardiac Services and Physician Relations. Taking a break from her healthcare career, Laura opened her personal chef service business in 1999. In 2007, Laura sold her business and moved to Indianapolis to be closer to family. Miss Cotton worked as Medical Student Education Coordinator for the Department of Psychiatry at Indiana University School of Medicine before joining the team of devoted staff and faculty in Family Medicine at St. Vincent’s Hospital’s Primary Care Center who are passionate about promoting graduate medical education. Laura balances her interests in the art and science of medicine with continued passion for the culinary world, sailing and international travel.
