Program Highlights

 

Goals of Fellowship:

  • To become a fully qualified geriatrician equal to the challenges of caring for the older person in a variety of clinical settings.
  • To gain experience as a primary care physician with an emphasis in the care of the older adult and as a specialist in geriatric medicine.
  • To gain clinical experience within a community teaching hospital, an ambulatory outpatient clinic and a long term care facility.
  • To gain a multidisciplinary perspective on the unique clinical, psychological, social and functional problems faced in the elderly population.


Desired Qualifications

  • The fellow will be committed to pursue a career in academic Family Medicine/Geriatrics or Internal Medicine Geriatrics.
  • The fellow will have shown special interest in geriatric medicine either while in practice or in a residency program.
  • The fellow will demonstrate interest and involvement in community activities.


Requirements 

The fellow will have satisfactorily completed a 3-year accredited family practice or internal medicine residency program and/or be Board-certified in Family Practice or Internal Medicine.

Resources 

  • St.Vincent Hospital is a 699-bed acute care JACHO accredited facility. St.Vincent houses a 25-bed Transitional Care Unit, a 12-bed Senior Adult Mental Health Unit, an 8-bed Medical Psychiatric Unit, a 10-bed Geriatric Partial Hospitalization Unit, inpatient geriatric consultation, Hospice and Emergency Department.
  • St.Vincent Institute on Aging is an ambulatory care setting located at St.Vincent Hospital and provides the home base of operation for the Geriatric Medicine Program.
  • Hooverwood Jewish Home for the Aged is a 188-bed long-term care institution located 2.5 miles from St.Vincent Hospital.
  • St.Vincent Home Care offers outpatient/home care to approximately 375 patients. It is located 1 block from St.Vincent Hospital.
  • Marquette Manor is a continuing care community of 350 residents in independent living and 50 residents in assisted living. There are approximately 80 residents in ECF. It is located within one mile of St.Vincent Hospital.
  • St.Vincent Family Medicine and Internal Medicine Residencies provide experienced faculty with a broad range of interests.
  • Multiple private subspecialty offices.

  • 12 Months
  • This fellowship is accredited with the ABFP
