Foreign / International Medical Graduates

We will begin accepting applications for July 2010 on September 1, 2009.

Applications

  • Applications to all of our Residency Programs are only accepted through ERAS application service as part of the match process.
  • We are unable to accept any documents via fax or email.
  • Application deadline December 31, 2009.
  • All positions are filled through the NRMP.  There are no pre-match positions available.
  • Our goal is to match with the best doctors regardless of whether they are IMG’s or USMG’s.
  • For those who have graduated from medical school, we prefer ECFMG certification be provided via ERAS by October 31. Step 2 results are preferred prior to rank list due date and a passing result is required for state licensure for those who match prior to orientation in mid-June.

Visas

Most International Medical Graduates work under a J-1 Visa.
If you match at St. Vincent the policy of the Department of Medical Education is to consider the visa of your choice, provided that there is time to acquire it and that you have the proper credentials.  We prefer the J visa because it is less expensive, requires less paperwork and a shorter period of time is needed to acquire it.  In our experience, the J visa is easier to secure, whereas the H visa can be denied or held up for multiple reasons.

USMLE Scores

  • No minimum score requirement.
  • We do not screen applications for review based strictly on a minimum score.
  • We prefer to see scores at or above the mean.
  • All USMLE examinations must have been taken within the last 5 years.
  • USMLE Steps 1 & 2 passed within 2 attempts; Step 3 is not required but carries the same expectation of minimal attempts.

Medical School

US Clinical Experience

  • at least 3 months of US clinical experience  required, but prefer 12 months.
  • US clinical experience or externship with written evaluation at hospitals in which the student or physician had meaningful responsibility for patient management decisions is required.
  • Observerships do not qualify.  Hands-on clinical experience is required.

Observerships

We do not provide observerships before the match.  If you match in one of our programs, there is a possibility of an observership or externship after the match and before residency in order to assist you with orientation to our hospital.

Should you have any questions after reviewing our information, please contact Laura Cotton at llcotton@stvincent.org. Although E-mail is our preferred method for communication, the Internal Medicine/Family Medicine Residency Program Office may also be reached at (317) 338-7600.

*On May 22, 2008 the Medical Licensing Board of Indiana recognized the California Medical School Standards as equivalent to LCME standards as required for approved foreign medical schools in Indiana.
