Applications
Applications to all St Vincent Residency Programs are only accepted through the
ERAS application service for the match. It is important to know that we
are unable to accept or store any documents (CV's, letters of reference, etc. via
fax or email). We prefer to receive applications by January 1 so we have time
to review it and possibly schedule an interview before February 1. All positions
are filled through the NRMP. There are no pre-match positions available. Our goal
is to match the best people that we can find into our Residency programs regardless
of their country of origin. We presently have US-trained and international medical graduates
in residency at our hospital.
Visas
If you match at St. Vincent the policy of the Medical Education Department is to
consider the visa of your choice, provided that there is time to acquire this visa
and that you have the proper credentials. We are very much in favor of the J1 visa
because it is much less expensive and requires less paperwork and time. We have
found that the J1 visa is almost a sure thing in a quick turn around time frame,
whereas the H visa can be denied or held up for multiple reasons.
USMLE Scores
USMLE Step 1 and CK need to be passed on the first attempt, preferably with a score in the mid-80's or higher. USMLE CS, must be passed on the first attempt. It is not necessary to have completed USMLE Step 3 in order to apply to our program.
Residency program committees review applications in their entirety, looking for
good scores, good letters of reference, a quality medical school record, recent
graduation dates, experience, research and volunteer efforts. Applicants should
have passed USMLEs on the first attempt. It is not necessary to have completed USMLE
Step 3 in order to apply to our program.
Medical School Graduation Date
We like to see medical school graduation dates within the past 3 years. Exceptions
to this are possible, provided that there has been experience, practice, and documentation
of continuing medical education since graduation.
US Clinical Experience
To be successful in our program, we have found that applicants need a minimum of 3 months of U.S., hands-on inpatient clinical experience. More than 3 only enhances the quality of your application and provides you with a better chance of being selected for an interview. We do not consider observerships or research experience as U.S., hands-on, inpatient clinical experience.
Observerships
We do not provide observerships before the match. Following a favorable interview,
there is a possibility of an observership either before the match or before residency
in order to assist you with orientation to our hospital.
